How To Get A Divorce In Ct
Reader Question: My mom has a pacemaker and she wants to get a full-body CT scan to make sure she doesn't have cancer or another medical problem. Could the scan damage her pacemaker?
You're right to be concerned. A new warning from the FDA says that CT (computed tomography) scans may cause some medical devices, such as pacemakers, implanted defibrillators and insulin pumps, to malfunction. If your mom's doctor didn't recommend the scan, she should pass. If this is under doctor's orders, however, she should remind her doctor about the pacemaker and ask if she really needs a full-body scan or if just part of her body can be scanned to minimize radiation exposure.
Assuming she goes ahead with any type of CT scan, she should tell the technician about the pacemaker so that he can use the lowest possible dose of radiation and try to avoid the area of the device. However, no one—including healthy people without pacemakers—should be getting a CT scan without first discussing it with his or her doctor. Some private companies have started marketing CT scans directly to consumers, but these expensive tests could expose you to a lot of radiation unnecessarily. Another downside: The scans can pick up tiny "problems" that are really nothing to worry about but lead to more invasive testing.
